Message from Scott Barron, Founder of School Growth:
The Emotional Challenge of School Leadership
At the Innovation Workshop this week, one of the participating Catholic school board members asked,
"Why is school leadership so difficult and complex? I have been involved as an executive in very large companies, but I've found the school to be much more of a challenge, especially when it comes to the emotional reactions."
She's right--school administration does involve making emotionally-charged decisions on a daily basis. And that's exhausting for anyone. With parents more sensitive when it comes to situations that affect their children, coupled with an overconfidence in their knowledge of school leadership and the facts at hand, resolving conflict is a big part of the job.
You can create a school culture that has a higher degree of trust through proactive communications that strengthen the grapevine, establishing best practices for listening and responding to concerns, and preparing your board members, faculty, and parents through discussions in advance regarding various scenarios that are likely to happen throughout the year and how you will handle them when they occur.
Consistenly and deliberately developing the emotional intelligence throughout your school community will help you reduce the stress and strain.
Be Strong & Courageous,
Scott
