The 45% Difference of a Very Effective Teacher
My Friend, one fact of school leadership hasn't changed in the last 50 years:
Teacher Quality and Engagement matters more to
student achievement than any other aspect of a school.
Writer/Director/Author M. Night Shyamalan put it this way in his book, I Got Schooled: "Students who spend a single year with a very effective teacher get up to 45% more out of that year than students who spend it with an average teacher."
Yet, we've consistently found that when school administrators are prompted to specifically define “high performing” when it comes to personnel, they acknowledge that the percentage of their faculty in that top quality range is less than 25%.
Having delivered training and services to over 800 schools in 15 countries over the last 24 months, it increasingly appears to us that the primary source of lackluster school performance is a fundamental imbalance in priorities—a leadership paradox that stems from a failure to invest at least as much time and energy into improving faculty talent, energy and engagement as is allocated to advancing the curriculum, technology, sports, etc.
What will you do differently in 2017 to increase faculty quality and engagement? We invite you to use our online video training that is now available to spark a new dialogue and commitment among your leadership team and school board. The impact you have on the lives of so many people makes the investment in professional development worth it.
